Well! I am so glad that I found this in the sale pile and picked it up. I am sure I never thought much about the immigrant experience--what it was like for my family living in the poorer neighborhoods of South Philadelphia--when I read it the first time way back in junior high school. I know that my family was never as close to starvation as was Franny's family, but they could have been.
I want my now adult children to read this book. I want them to have an idea of what life was like a hundred years ago and to know that this is where they came from. That this is what life was like for their great-grandparents.
Betty Smith has written a beautifully rich book about coming of age in the early 20th century. There is no wonder that it is still in print.
