How to Read a Painting: Lessons from the Old Masters - Patrick De Rynck

I've just started reading and already I have complaints.

First, the book does not open easily without cracking the spine. It's tough reading what's in the middle of the page, let alone what is in the gutter.

Second, the organization is very  frustrating. It's by painting rather than by topic. If you want to know how to recognize which saint or mythological being is which by the symbols, you are going to be jumping from place to place in the book and spending a lot of time in the index. The book should be divided subject matter rather than a simple chronological display of paintings.
